How much of the world has been excavated for archaeological purposes? ?

I have been doing some thinking lately about some of the essays I have read from american archaeologists regarding Native American artifacts and dwellings. Being a Native American from one of the tribes that was mentioned, I was interested to see just how off these archaeologists were regarding some of our artifacts, as well as practices. I wonder why they don’t bother to consult the existing native americans on such matters…anyways, I began to wonder how wrong archaeologists are regarding other “facts” that have been discovered from other archaeological digs around the world. Now I am curious as to how many square miles of the world (and the areas of the sea accessible to us) have actually been excavated. I am sure this number is very small, yet we base so much of our knowledge of history on it. I looked it up on line, but cant find an estimate anywhere. Does anybody know the answer? And a reputable source? Thanks in advance for satisfying my curiosity…
Nah, I am just curious. If anything we should be excavating more. ๐Ÿ™‚

Trying to find out what my Indian artifact is?

I have a stone tool of some sort that was found in a field in Catawba County NC, so probably came from Catawba Indians. It is smooth, crescent shaped, with rounded ends. It has these indentions across it that look like finger marks or something. Also, there is a small edge on one of the rounded parts that looks smoother, more worn than the rest of the tool. I have googled and googled and cant really find anything exactly like it. It is about 6 inches long from end to end. It probably weighs around a pound.
ok, here are some pics :

Indian Artifact Help/Arrowhead/Tomahawk?

I found this oddly shaped stone in a cave in Tennessee several years back. Rumor has it that Indians occupied the area and after examining the stone, it appears to be a hatchet or a tomahawk. As you can see from the picture, the small end is rounded off and at the wider end the edge is flat (may have been used to hammer or crush?) Also, closer to the wider end are two “dimples” in the stone perhaps where it was either held as used as a tool or latched to a stick? Any information, time frame, tribe would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Yahoo is being dumb and wont let me load the url so go to tinypic and after the .com type /r/ineo05/5
Thanks for the information David. Would you have any idea how old it might be or what tribe used it? It came from north central Tennessee…Thanks!

native american burial mound?

OK so I just found out this public place is built on top of a burial mound… there are still bones in it and the bones they already dug up were reburied in another location in a mass gave type deal…. is this right? it has been kind of bothering me since I found out about it…. but does this happen alot at old burial sites? shouldn’t they have moved all the bones/artifacts first? or is the fact they left it alone ( and built on top of it) better? OR should they have not been allowed to build on the site at all? thoughts? opinions?

thanks!
this place was built in the 40’s and continued expanding through the 70’s…. and a certain television station owned it and basicallyl covered up the fact it was such an extensive site… I think it was pretty illegal actually…. but I mean what can be done now? the damage is done… however, I still feel horrible about the fact there are still people burried there…
